Workplace Wellbeing Interventions – Thriving People in Thriving Organisations

Thriving People in Thriving Organisations

Organisations and the individuals who work in them can only thrive when there is concern for wellbeing. This can be described as having a culture of care. Leaders of course have a crucial role to play here, given how much the day-to-day behaviour of managers has a direct impact on their teams.

Research by many organisations confirms a strong link between employee engagement and wellbeing. Not only do engagement and wellbeing reinforce each other, but they also add to each other. In other words, higher levels of wellbeing enhance the benefits of engagement.

We need to be mindful when using the term “wellbeing” as it is an overused term which tends to be ill-defined and misunderstood. It’s often the ‘soft and fluffy’ side of wellbeing which is the focus of interventions (such as healthy eating, gym membership and so on) and whilst such interventions are beneficial to individuals, they’re unlikely to result in long-term sustainable organisational effects.

To benefit in performance terms from wellbeing, we need to start thinking about it in a different way and recognise the crucial role that creating cultures of care has on driving business improvement. The popular approaches to wellbeing, which we often refer to as “bikes and bananas” are not a bad thing per se, but if these are the only wellbeing interventions being utilised by businesses they are unlikely to have much impact on performance at all.

Covid has brought with it a new set of ‘bikes and bananas’ approaches with the focus being on mental health awareness, resilience building and how to successfully work from home. These front line interventions are not where the focus needs to be to have a genuine impact on either wellbeing or engagement. Rather, we need to focus on interventions which identify the root causes of poor mental wellbeing, resilience or hybrid working within our businesses – in particular the role managers and leaders play.

Wellbeing Culture Assessment – Our wellbeing culture assessments include both qualitative and quantitative measures. The tools and techniques we use are based on the latest research and evaluation in this area. A thorough assessment allows focussed interventions to be put into place and can inform the development and success of a wellbeing strategy. In addition, we can benchmark your wellbeing culture using our wellbeing culture maturity model.

Wellbeing Strategy Development – We are skilled in the development and implementation of comprehensive workplace wellbeing strategies which include a variety of proactive interventions based on the requirements of the business and its people. A comprehensive wellbeing strategy should include interventions focused at the organisational, leadership and individual level.

Workplace Wellbeing Programmes – Our workplace wellbeing programmes achieve a step change in wellbeing culture by winning the hearts and minds of employees and developing and supporting managers, leaders and the senior team. There is no ‘one size fits all’ with wellbeing programmes and success hinges on a through understanding o the effectiveness of various interventions and the ability to tailor these interventions to the needs of clients.

Work-Related Stress/Psychosocial Risk Assessment – Work-related stress risk assessments are a legal requirement under Health and Safety Legislation. Employers have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work by conducting a work-related stress risk assessment and acting on it (HSE). The HSE Management Standards Approach is one way in which such risk assessments can be conducted. The Management Standards highlight the six key areas that can lead to work-related stress if they are not managed properly. Real World Group have developed a robust evidence-based process for assessing work-related stress utilising HSE’s Management Standards. Once a work-related stress risk assessment has been completed targeted interventions can be identified to manage the risk and reduce work-related stress within the organisation.

Leading for Wellbeing Masterclasses – These impactful masterclasses are designed for senior teams to enable them to fully understand the business case for addressing workplace wellbeing and to gain their full support for any workplace wellbeing assessment or intervention that might be taking place. Support from the senior team is essential to the success of workplace wellbeing interventions.
