The personality assessment industry is huge in the UK as in most of the international working world. There are many very useful applications of personality in the workplace from selection through to coaching and development. Personality tools range from those that are fairly simple to complete and administer to others that take much longer and are more nuanced in their interpretation. However, despite the very widespread application of these tools, a little known fact about them is that they are not actually good predictors of job performance, and assess very little leadership capability.

There are various reasons why personality is such a poor predictor of performance and why it should not be applied alone to select for leadership, or to develop leaders.
